ABSTRACT

Teaching Business Information Systems programs faces increased pressure from several sources. On the one hand the underlying field of IT and technologies change rapidly, on the other future employers of BIS graduates have diverging expectation (which has also been changing). Furthermore, digital savviness of students and their expectations towards highly technological teaching solutions is increasing, while new pedagogical methods gaining ground as well. To meet these challenges - further complicated with the demand for blended learning solution by the recent pandemic - require higher education institutions to find new ways of delivering BIS degree programs. The approach reported in this paper proposes the redesign of the full curriculum (instead of just 'fixing' individual courses). Such redesign is organized around the TOGAF framework and utilizes problem-based learning and online education pushed to the extreme. Elements of the proposal (called BIPER) has been tested in the context of a Summer School using VR technology and online collaboration tools. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Modern manufacturing enterprises must be agile to cope with sudden demand changes arising from increased global competition, geopolitical factors, and unforeseen circumstances such as the Covid-19 pandemic. Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing sector lack agility due to lower penetration of Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT), the inability to employ highly skilled human capital, and the absence of a formal innovation ecosystem for new products or solutions. In recent years, Cloud-based Design and Manufacturing (CBDM) has emerged as an enabler for product realization by integrating various service-based models. However, the existing framework does not thoroughly support the innovation ecosystem from concept to product realization by formally addressing economic challenges and human skillset requirements. The present work considers the augmentation of the Design-as-a-Service (DaaS) model into the existing CBDM framework for enabling systematic product innovations. The DaaS model proposes to connect skilled human resources with enterprises interested in transforming an idea into a product or solution through the CBDM framework. The model presents an approach for integrating human resources with various CBDM elements and end-users through a service-based model. The challenges associated with successfully implementing the proposed model are also discussed. It is established that the DaaS has the potential for rapid and economical product discovery and can be readily accessible to SMEs or independent individuals. ABSTRACT

Purpose>The purposes of this paper are to: (1) characterize farmers’ market manager and vendor perceptions of the economic, social and environmental impact markets have on their local communities;and (2) how those impacts are tracked and communicated to market actors and the local community.Design/methodology/approach>Twenty-nine semistructured interviews were conducted with market managers and vendors across four farmers’ markets within Michigan. The interviews were coded and analyzed using thematic analysis.Findings>Managers and vendors report economic and social and environmental benefits associated with the presence of a farmers' market, consistent with the existing literature. Metrics are tracked to estimate market impact, particularly economic and social benefits. Market managers reported uncertainty about how best to use data internally, and there are gaps in communicating market impacts with vendors. Most data are used for external reporting, to statewide organizations or for grant evaluation. Respondents reported data fatigue and unwillingness among vendors to share personal business information due to concerns about privacy relative to the perceived benefits of sharing data.Practical implications>Additional resources are needed for markets, specifically market managers, to better utilize the data they collect for internal versus external purposes.Originality/value>Metric collection and reporting are a nascent development among markets. Understanding how market actors are utilizing these tools will provide guidance to improve future efforts at impact measurement.

ABSTRACT

Research background: This paper focuses on the preparers’ opinion on reporting in the European Single Electronic Format (ESEF).Purpose: The goal of the paper is to examine the preparers’ perception of adopting Inline XBRL as a fundamental technology to report annual consolidated financial statements under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) within the ESEF framework.Research methodology: In the present work, Poland was considered as a case study. Using the survey, we obtained evidence from 25 issuers of securities listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, whose financial reports were complied with IFRS.Results: The questionnaires were completed in the majority by issuers with no previous experience in XBRL utilisation. One of the more significant findings to emerge from this study is that respondents could not be able to judge the appropriateness of Inline XBRL selection as a digital reporting format, or they disagreed with it. Furthermore, over half of them saw no need to extend this technology to other business reports, including non-financial reporting.Novelty: The paper can offer valuable pre-insights into preparers’ perception of introducing Inline XBRL in the context of ESEF reporting and ensure initial feedback to the policy-makers responsible for ongoing and forthcoming digital reporting standards initiatives in the European Union.

ABSTRACT

Universities have encountered numerous difficulties and challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. They used various approaches to deal with these challenges. Unfortunately, these experiences are not widely discussed. Therefore, this study provides preliminary insights on how the business information systems department at the Faculty of Organizational Sciences, University of Maribor managed to overcome different challenges and executed the study process completely online in the COVID-19 pandemic. Experiences of conducting several courses at the bachelor and master level are reported in the paper. We also provide some suggestions on how to overcome specific challenges faced by students and lecturers. In the future, we wish to conduct a multiple case study including the viewpoints of lecturers, support staff, and students. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

So far, the biggest challenge for a comprehensive Business Information Systems (BIS) education curriculum was the fast-changing nature of its target market and the resulting demand for a combination of up-to-date technical knowledge, organization-centred mindset, and adaptive skills. However, advances in pedagogical methods, changes in the skills of high-school graduates, and widening online options in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic brought on a new set of expectations. This situation may be considered an opportunity to address the threat of potentially increasing mismatch and misalignment between competences required by the IS industry labour market and current training contents offered and methods used by higher education institutions. This paper provides a systematic and comprehensive overview of the challenges BIS programs have to face and address. It considers everyday experiences of BIS educators and current best practices as starting point. Then provides an overview of employer and alumni opinion, as well as reviews up-to-date teaching methods related to teaching soft computer skills. It also considers the requirements and opportunities related to an increasingly online-centred situation. Based on these challenges the paper lays down the foundation for a potential curriculum design approach intended to address all of the above issues in an integrated framework. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to determine the difference in the quality of voluntary disclosure of listed hotel companies in Croatia for the observed 2013 and 2020. It has been proven that quality reporting reduces capital costs, promotes the company and in this way the company gains the trust of investors. There are two types of disclosure that apply to listed companies, mandatory - regulated by law and voluntary - depends on the decision of management. The notion of quality of voluntary disclosure in this paper refers to the amount of voluntarily published information regarding the business of a company that helps users of this information in making correct judgments regarding the current situation and future business results. For the purposes of operationalizing the research, an aggregate measure called the transparency index was used. In this paper each voluntarily published information has equal significance, so an unweighted index was used. In accordance with the above methodology, a questionnaire of 50 questions was prepared, which includes historical data, business information, managerial analysis, business plans, non-financial and statistical information, as well as information on the management, supervisory board and shareholders. The research for the purposes of this paper was conducted on a sample of 14 hotel companies whose shares were listed on the Zagreb Stock Exchange at the end of 2013 and at the end of 2020. The difference in the quality of voluntary disclosure between 2013 and 2020 was determined by the Wilcoxon test. The results obtained by testing indicate that in 2020 voluntary disclosure is significantly better.

ABSTRACT

In the new concept of national security, intelligence collects business information and has a significant place in the range of instruments for achieving the economic dimension of national security. Vulnerability in the information system causes a negative chain reaction in all other systems and is therefore a matter of general security. The value of business information is measured in billions of dollars, and the U.S. economy has suffered $ 300 billion in damage over the past few years due to the loss of business information. Effective information security can be achieved through a holistic approach that includes organizational and sociological factors within the organization combined with technological measures. Information security should be the responsibility of everyone in the organization, from management and the CEO to the lower level of management and all employees. People are a crucial factor in ensuring the security of the organization and the most common causes of information loss by employees are omissions and fraud, and information security depends on employee behavior that can enhance security and nurture an information security culture that promotes positive security behavior. It is important that the business entity assesses the risks and what information will be available to the public, and that it uses innovative technologies related to the defensive dimension - counterintelligence and greater security of the business entity.

ABSTRACT

Employee salary is an indispensable factor for which workers come to work every day. Without wages, people would not be able to live or meet their basic living needs. Is the salary only the main motivating factor for employees to come to work, or are there other factors of employee satisfaction in the workplace, which are also important to them? Employees work for a salary and it is the main reason for coming to work. However, what are the attitudes of employees when they have a choice, higher salary or job security? Higher salary or good work atmosphere, correct superiors and correct work colleagues? The aim of this paper is to use the method of scientific research to obtain data on the questions asked, statistically process the collected data and draw conclusions after the research. The survey was conducted in January 2022, on a random sample of 233 respondents (employees) in the Republic of Croatia. Respondents are employees of private and state-owned companies in the Republic of Croatia. Three hypotheses have been set: H1: Intangible factors of satisfaction are more important to employees than high salary, H2: Employees have the most important intangible factor - correct behavior of superiors, H3: Employees want a higher salary for their work. Hypotheses H1 and H3 were accepted by the results of this research, while hypothesis H2 was not accepted because the most important intangible factor of satisfaction for employees is a good work atmosphere.
